Re purposing an old android phone as a security camera.

I had been considering trying to use an old android phone as a security/monitoring device. One example of an application would be to be able to check the basement to make sure that the sump pump was operational if I was out of the house.

UPDATE – DECEMBER 2019 – The fact that you can get a WAZE camera for less than $30 makes re purposing old phones inefficient and probably irrelevant.

I came across a great article on HowToGeek  as to do exactly this.

Their provide two solutions, one for continuous streaming and one for motion detected photos. While this might not be as flexible as an out of the box purpose built security camera it might work.

One thing to check is that the battery is good and not getting hot while the phone is running.
